It’s an overdone, overwritten story. Dave Chappelle was at the top of his game. Then, he literally walked away from a $50 million dollar contract for the Chappelle’s Show and all but disappeared. “Disappearance” is a dramatic statement. Instead, Chappelle traveled to Africa and moved to a farm in Ohio. He appeared occasionally onstage for loose sets, but the Chappelle that fans raised up was no longer. It would be almost a decade until he’d resurface.
His Journey Back
Dave Chappelle returned to full-time stand-up touring in 2013, but it was met with unease and drama. During a Hartford tour stop, he walked off the stage due to aggressive heckling from crowd members. A few days later while in Chicago, he stated super negative comments about Hartford and his refusal to ever return. It was not a smooth way for Chappelle to re-enter full-time stand-up. However, Chappelle did return to Hartford for the 2014 Oddball Festival and received overwhelming support from the crowd.
2014 marked his big comeback, as Chappelle performed ten nights at Radio City Music Hall. He was back. In 2016, Chappelle hosted Saturday Night Live. Netflix announced a three-episode stand-up comedy special that would drop in 2017. In March 2017, Netflix did indeed pull three concert specials out of the vault. It would mark his first concert specials in years, and they quickly became the most viewed comedy specials in Netflix history.
Chappelle still lives on the farm in Ohio with his wife and children. Therefore, he seems to have incorporated a balance between family life away from the spotlight as well as his love for stand-up comedy performance and touring.
2017 Radio City Music Hall Residency
From August to early September, another Radio City Music Hall run would take over Chappelle’s 2017 career trajectory. This lineup included many famous faces. Chance The Rapper, Trevor Noah, Childish Gambino, Lauryn Hill, and Solange are just a few of the names scheduled to appear as guest stars on select nights. His career continues to plug forward, and his mindset seems better than ever.
Tonight, Chappelle performs with Chance The Rapper as his guest star. His Radio City Music Hall residencies are known for this: an influx and excess of guest performers that make the night all the more memorable for audience, if not even a little overcrowded.
