What’s Not to Love About Chance the Rapper?
Born and raised in Chicago, IL, famed performer Chance the Rapper made a staggering announcement on Monday March 6th; that he would be donating $1 million to the Chicago Public School system. This generous gesture comes after a meeting between Chance and the governor of Illinois. Chance felt as though the recently announced budget cuts to the school system were unacceptable, so he decided to take matters into his own hands. As a former student in the Chicago Public School system, Chance feels passionate about furthering the resources of each student. He believes there is an abundance of creativity, and with a little extra funding these students would flourish.
Referring to his donation as “a call to action,” Chance is also encouraging companies around the country to contribute as well. To motivate others the performer announced that on top of every $100,000 raised, his non-profit organization, SocialWorks would donate an additional $10,000.
According to RollingStone, Chance’s generosity is not stemming only from the fact that he was a student in the Chicago Public School system, but because of the staggering losses the schools, and students would face without the proper funding. Governor Rauner is aiming to cut the budget which would have the potential to lay off thousands of staff members, or even cut the school year short by 13 days. After hearing about the losses, Chance used money from his spring tour ticket sales to fund the donation. He then stated “I’m not a politician. It’s not my job to propose any policy. [My responsibility] is to make sure the children have the resources for a quality education.” (RollingStone).
Chance the Rapper is well-respected within the music industry, and is known for being a generous, and humble human being. As his own singer, song-writer, and producer the artist won three Grammy Awards this winter, and continues to expand his fan base to no surprise.
