With British boy band One Direction coming out of nowhere to become Ticket Liquidator’s highest-grossing artist of 2012, and with a ton of 1D ticket on sales coming up this weekend, we figured it was time for Live Toast to write the official guide to the phenomenon known as One Direction.
Initially gaining traction in the fall of 2011, One Direction fever has reached dizzying heights and shows no signs of abating. The quintet is set to perform in venues all over the globe, and have already outsold the likes of Madonna, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bruce Springsteen and many more en-route to becoming the hottest act of 2012. Featuring five boys carefully handpicked from the auditioning cast of The X Factor, One Direction is like Justin Bieber times five. If you thought Bieber Fever was out of control, wait ’till you see what Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson and lets not forget music godfather and group creator Simon Cowell, have in store for us in the age of Twitter.
Following in the tradition of carefully crafted money making machines like Hannah Montana, Drake, The Spice Girls, Il Divo, Backstreet Boys, New Kids on the Block and many more, the One Direction band is set to make more money and sell more 1D tickets than if Elvis and Tupac came out of hiding and went on a joint tour. With the backing of Cowell, Biebs himself, Kelly Clarkson and more, it looks like Sony has found its latest meal ticket and is in no hurry to let them go anywhere any time soon.
The story of the One Direction band members coming together starts with the five boys applying as solo candidates for The X Factor. Not one of the quintet made the cut as solo artists, and at the suggestion of Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger they decided to form the newest boy band, and One Direction was born. Simon Cowell, the man behind American Idol, The X Factor, Got Talent, Susan Boyle, Il Divo, and many more, recognizes a cash cow when he sees one, and got the youngsters together to form One Direction, signing the band to his Syco Records, a subsidiary of Sony Music, and teen girls everywhere have never been the same. With the Backstreet Boys reunion faltering and Justin Timberlake not interested in an N Sync reunion, the timing was perfect for the next boy band craze to steal the hearts of teeny boppers everywhere. They got in the studio and started practicing, and ended up coming in third on the Factor, behind Matt Cardle and Rebecca Ferguson. But they got the last laugh, as they had the marketing prowess of Simon Cowell behind them. Using experience of a lifetime in the industry and drawing on inspiration from his first boy band Il Divo, Simon and his label Syco Records spent countless hours grooming the golden goose. You know that after they shelled out £2 million to sign the One Direction band members, they were going to make sure they got their money’s worth.
And get their money’s worth they did. Before getting in the studio, One Direction hit the road to get their feet wet performing live on the X Factor Live Tour in early 2011. While there were other stars on the X Factor Live tour, you can bet that most of the fans buying tickets wanted to see One Direction in concert live. They thrilled their audience with big hits, and before long were in the studio taking direction from some of the biggest-grossing people in music.
One Direction’s debut single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” was released in September 2011 and quickly climbed to the #1 spot on the British charts as well as gaining more than 75 million views on YouTube. One Direction has also made some good friends in the Tweenerverse, befriending Justin Bieber himself join the band in the studio.
The official What Makes You Beautiful music video, which at last count had more than 100 million views, launched the One Direction revolutions and caused more teenage girls to sob uncontrollably than Justin Bieber falling at the NBA’s Celebrity All-Star Game.
Up All Night
“It’s anthemic. We can’t say that enough times. Powerful.” One Direction’s Zayn Malik on the bands debut album Up All Night.
For 1D’s debut album, Up All Night, Cowell and his music-making crew enlisted the likes of Kelly Clarkson, RedOne, Ed Sheeran, Steve Mac, Savan Kotecha, Carl Falk, Toby Gad and Rami Yacoub to help refine the quintet’s sound. These are the people behind some of the biggest-grossing artists of all time, artists like Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Pink, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Usher, so you know One Direction was in good hands.
One Direction’s debut single “What Makes You Beautiful” was released on September 11, 2011 and the second single “Gotta Be You” on November 13, 2011. All together there are 13 songs on the album, and the real fans that shelled our more money for the deluxe edition got an extra two tracks. There was so much demand for the One Direction album that Sony decided to release the album early, stating “due to overwhelming fan demand, their debut album will be released one week early on 13 March 2012.”
The dance-pop infused pop rock album has blazed a trail in the hearts of teeny boppers everywhere. And after working with so many luminaries, the band was pleased with the end result. “It’s anthemic. We can’t say that enough times,” Malik told the Daily Star. “To work with RedOne was such a big deal. It’s more like the sound he created with Nicole Scherzinger. Powerful.”
1D’s debut album Up All Night came out in November of 2011 and reached #2 on the UK album charts but in March of 2012 debuted at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Charts. In one of the many milestones the One Direction band is making, they are the first UK band ever to have their debut album reach number one in the United States.
